A colossal figure with a heart for humanity. A selfless leader.  A humble and hugely compassionate man, devoted to ensuring adequate primary healthcare services to all as a basic human right. These were just some of the words used by management, staff and students of Nelson Mandela University to describe the late Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Professor Lungile Pepeta, who passed away from COVID-19 complications on 7 August 2020. A memorial service was held in his honour on 14 August 2020.


Nelson Mandela University paid tribute to the life-long intellectual contribution of Professor Maarten de Wit, Chair of Earth Stewardship Science, and Founding Director of the Africa Earth Observatory Network (AEON). His untimely passing on 14 April 2020 left the univeristy community deeply saddened. He was commemorated in this video live-streamed on 28 April 2020 - for his remarkable contribution to our global past, present and future.
